Can I Travel independently in Tibet?

Is Tibet Travel Permit required to travel to Tibet?

Travelers entering from China need to show a valid passport and Chinese visa while applying for Tibet Travel Permits. Travelers entering from Nepal only need passport copies.
Do we need any other permits to visit Tibet?
Tibet Travel Permit is accepted within counties of Lhasa. If your travel plan includes visiting beyond Lhasa, consider applying for other restricted area permits as well. However, your travel operator will do it for you.
Additional Permits to travel to Tibet
An alien travel permit is required if you want to travel into one or more counties in Tibetan Autonomous Region. Issued by the Local Public Security Bureau, this permit allows you to travel to more than one prefecture. For instance, traveling from Lhasa to Everest Base Camp, you will enter from Lhasa prefecture to Shigatse prefecture.
A border permit is mandatory if your travel itinerary includes the border destination area. For example, traveling from Nepal to Tibet or going to Mount Kailash or Everest Base Camp. This additional permit is required along with the Tibet Travel Permit.
A military permit is required for traveling into sensitive military regions. Like traveling to Ngari province (Mount Kailash region), Nyinchi province, or traveling overland from or to Yunan Qinghai province.
How do I enter Tibet?
Tibet can be entered only from Mainland China or from Nepal. If you are entering Tibet from Nepal, consider getting a Chinese group visa from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Kathmandu. From Nepal, you can either fly to Tibet or travel overland. The fastest way to get to Lhasa is by air. Lhasa has only access to Kathmandu for international flight operations. The overland journey to Lhasa from Kathmandu covers a distance of 1,300 kilometers, taking 7-8 days.
If you are entering Tibet via China, there are more options. There are daily flights to Lhasa, Nyinchi, and Shigatse from Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Xian, and Kunming. But the most frequent flights are available from Chengdu. Also considering train travel from Beijing to Lhasa, which is one of the most beautiful train ride one can experience.
